Gas Free Developments
All new Cala developments going to planning since 1st January 2024 are gas free (where infrastructure allows).
Since launching our Sustainability Strategy in 2020, we've made some great progress in our sustainability journey. Our achievements so far are only the beginning, we will continue to develop this to sustain our long-term future and commitment to communities and the environment.
Our absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions have fallen 50.4% since 2021*. As an intensity metric, our Scope 1 and 2 emissions per 100m2 of developed floor area have fallen by over 46%.
Having refreshed our approach to Scope 3 emissions quantification, these emissions have reduced by 2.5% per 100m2 of developed floor area between 2023 and 2024.
These achievements are based on our 2024 data.

Whole-Life Carbon
The embodied carbon and design operational emissions of our homes have decreased 3.5% and 2.4% per 100m2 of developed floor area respectively between 2023 and 2024. 100% of our new homes now meet the RIBA 2025 Climate Challenge target for embodied carbon.
Construction Waste
We have reached our target and divert 99.9% of our construction waste from landfill. Since 2021, we've reduced our construction waste intensity by 18.8%
Liquid Fuel Emissions
We've introduced sustainably sourced hydrotreated vegetable oil as a diesel alternative for our site operations. This has reduced our liquid fuel emissions by 87% since 2021. All our HVO is RFAS approved.
EPC Ratings
Over 90% of our homes achieve an EPC rating of A or B, with an average rating of 86 across the Cala Group.
Timber Frame
In 2024, 41% of all legal completions were timber frame. In Scotland, we build 93.5% of homes with timber frame. Across England, we are increasing the use of timber frame across our developments. We are working towards 100% of homes being timber frame by 2030.
Supporting Wildlife
Over 5,000 nature-supporting features have been installed in our homes, as part of our Urban Wildlife Strategy. This includes integrated bird boxes, hedgehog friendly fences, invertebrate bricks, and bat roosting features.
Supporting Communities
Since launching in 2023, we have supported over 350 local businesses and supported 100 good causes through our Community Pledge.
Net-Zero Home
Our first operationally net-zero home has been built in Peterborough. We're using this to test performance and trial new technologies to use in the future.
Heat Network
In 2024, we sold our first home connected to a low carbon district heat network. We are actively exploring all opportunities for low carbon heating.
ULEV Vehicles
Over 25% of our staff have signed up to our ULEV (ultra-low emissions vehicle) scheme since its launch in 2021. Cumulatively, this has saved 1200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from entering our atmosphere.
Electricity
100% of Cala’s purchased electricity is renewable certified through REGO certification.
* This does not include the emissions from our timber frame company Taylor Lane which we acquired in 2024.
