To celebrate the evolving community at Netherhall Gardens in Cambridge, we’ve invited acclaimed sculptor Tim Norris to create a bespoke sculpture that reflects the spirit and story of the landscape. Known for blending sculpture, furniture, and architecture, Tim specialises in large-scale outdoor works that draw inspiration from their surroundings. His designs often incorporate indigenous natural materials alongside recycled or engineered elements, creating pieces that feel rooted in place.

Chilton Atheneum

The Chilton Athenaeum

As Lockdown One ended, Tim was finally able to install his artwork The Chilton Athenaeum on Chilton Fields, Oxfordshire—a commission he originally won in 2014. Thanks to the determination of the local community, the project was given permission on 2 June 2020. Working with Sawscapes, Tim delivered an ambitious installation comprising over 100 tons of local limestone placed into bespoke steel cages, topped with timber, and surrounded by excavated soil and grass. The design draws inspiration from its setting near the Ridgeway—Britain’s oldest road linking ancient earthworks—and the nearby Harwell Diamond Synchrotron, one of the UK’s most advanced science facilities. The work celebrates this dialogue between ancient and modern. Originally envisioned as a sculptural seating and performance area that could unite both sides of Chilton (the medieval village and the newer development separated by the A34), the project has indeed fulfilled that hope—made possible through the continued support of residents from both communities.

The Journey

The Journey

Created during Tim’s residency at I-Park, The Journey was part of the 2013 Environmental Art Biennale. I-Park invites artists to retreat into its unique landscape and respond through site-specific work. Constructed around a welded steel armature made from reclaimed reinforcement bar (salvaged from I-Park’s former life as an architectural salvage yard), the sculpture is clad in a hard shell of red oak bark harvested from a 300-year-old windblown oak. Beneath this surface lies a soft, living interior of moss—a lush, nest-like core. This layered globe, reminiscent of the Earth itself, evokes ideas of protection, shelter, and the interconnectedness of natural cycles.

Spring Cotte

Built for the 2015 Land Art Exhibition in Nolhaga Park, Alingsås, Spring Cotte is crafted from traditional Swedish pine roof shingles split using a heritage shingle-slicing machine, which gives each tile its distinctive natural curve. Inspired by this process, Tim combined the wood with welded steel to create a dynamic, tactile form. Set beneath a towering pine tree and surrounded by moss-covered stones and steep rocky walls, the sculpture appears closed from a distance. However, a discreet rear opening invites visitors inside, where light filters through the shingles, creating a luminous, contemplative space. Open year-round to the public, Spring Cotte is curated by Kulturföreningen Tomet.


Dwell

Dwell

Dwell is a sculptural bird hide situated on the banks of the Eco Lake at Conningbrook Lakes Country Park. Conceived as a quiet retreat from daily life, it offers a sheltered space to sit, observe, and connect with the landscape cared for by the Kent Wildlife Trust. Organic in form and reminiscent of an egg, Dwell draws inspiration directly from nature. It is constructed around a welded steel frame clad with 1,000 individually shaped cedar shingles. Each shingle—fixed with stainless steel cable ties for durability and flexibility—allows the wood to breathe and expand naturally with the seasons. Locally sourced cedar was milled to create unusually thick, traditionally tapered shingles, following rhythmic, organic patterns found in the natural world. The shelter accommodates small groups of 3–4 people, providing an intimate space for observation or reflection. Anchored with welded steel and Kentish ragstone foundations, Dwell is both rooted in its setting and responsive to the elements—a union of craftsmanship, function, and deep respect for place.

Clinker Boat Bench

Originally designed for Hamble’s town square, the Clinker Boat Bench was relocated to the Hamble foreshore after underground services were discovered on site. It now overlooks the river Hamble beside the sailing club—a fitting home for this piece inspired by the village’s historic boatbuilding traditions. Archival photographs informed the flowing lines and clinker-style curves, achieved through steam-bent oak timber. The result is a sculptural seating area that celebrates Hamble’s maritime heritage and invites quiet contemplation by the water.

The Subterreaneum Ampitheatre

Subterranean Amphitheatre

Commissioned by Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, the Subterranean Amphitheatre is set within the school grounds, taking advantage of expansive views over the playing fields. Working closely with staff and pupils, Tim designed and built a functional sculptural space for performances, drama classes, lectures, and assemblies—as well as a quiet retreat during breaks. Constructed from sweet chestnut timber and banked with soil and grass, the amphitheatre harmonises with its environment, fostering both creativity and community.
