Hi, I’m Keir and I completed Cala’s Graduate programme in 2017. I joined as Commercial Graduate and am now a Development Surveyor in Cala’s West of Scotland region. My role involves budgeting for future developments, appointing and managing subcontractors who carry out the work for us and reporting commercial impacts to the business.
I studied Civil Engineering at Stow College for two years, followed by two years at UWS Paisley. Since joining Cala, I have also completed further studies in Quantity Surveying, which were funded and fully supported by Cala.
I was attracted to Cala because they are a successful business and moving in the right direction. On leaving the assessment centre during the application process, I had a gut feeling that this was the right career path for me, due to the good nature of the people I met on the day. After that I instantly knew that I wanted the role.
I thoroughly enjoyed the graduate programme. Though it was a few years ago now, I have fond memories of the experiences and getting to fully understand and develop myself with likeminded people. I think it was a good introduction to housebuilding, which at the time was completely new to me. The personal development elements of the programme have been key to making me believe in my abilities and to support my team and other teams as best I can.
Since completing the Graduate Programme, I have moved into a Quantity Surveying role where I run my own sites and assist my manager in high level future site appraisals.
I like that I am trusted in my role and supported in the right ways. Working in housebuilding is exciting as there are always new developments round the corner and new opportunities to add value where you can and in the end you and your team are delivering new homes for people.
I would highly recommend the Grad Programme at Cala. I think it offers you good support and helps bed you into workplace and the housebuilding industry. It is a great hybrid in terms of getting the work experience, whilst having more personal development and learning alongside.
